How a magic escape room is born
My name is Flavio Iacobini, and I’ve been a magician since I was twenty.
In 25 years of shows and entertainment, I’ve organized about 3,000 events, and I’ve learned something no manual can teach you: the difference between helping someone pass the time and giving them a memory.
That’s why in 2016 I brought something to Rome that didn’t exist in Italy yet: an escape room where the theme wasn’t horror, but magic.
The first room I built didn’t look like the ones you’ll see today.
It was a start, not a masterpiece.
Every room taught me something: from how to build a puzzle that makes you feel like a genius when you solve it, to how to use light and sound to make you forget where you are, or how to make a secret passage appear at the exact moment you think you’re at a dead end.
Ten years and eleven rooms later, Magic Escape has three locations in the heart of Rome and a small magic-themed universe where every year thousands of people—families, friends, couples, and corporate teams—experience adventures like no other.
But what makes me proudest isn’t the number of rooms or locations.
It’s that more than 7,500 people took the time to write a review saying it was worth it.
Because those who enter our rooms don’t make comparisons
When you enter one of our rooms, you aren’t just “playing a game.”
You are walking onto a movie set.
Torches flickering on stone walls, doors creaking when you push them, shadows moving in the corner of your eye…
Every environment is designed and built by our team, from the first screw to the last special effect.
We don’t buy pre-fabricated rooms to assemble like furniture. We create them.
That’s why none of our eleven rooms look like another, and none look like anything you’ll find elsewhere.
But a set, no matter how spectacular, remains just a backdrop if there isn’t someone to bring it to life.
For this reason, in most of our rooms, there is a character performing for you.
They react to what you do, whisper a hint when they see you’re struggling, and put you under pressure when you’re about to win.
It’s not a special effect, and it’s not a hologram. It’s a person in the flesh who makes your adventure different every time, even if you’ve already done the room.
There is a specific reason why that character will never make you scream in fear.
In Rome, escape rooms are almost all horror-themed: dark rooms, zombies behind doors, jumpscares at every corner.
We chose a different path from day one, made of spells, potions, magic schools, and mysteries to reveal.
No jumpscares, no fake blood, no nightmares for the kids (and not for the parents either).
Magic excludes no one. And in a city where “escape room” has become almost synonymous with “haunted house,” this is the difference that matters most.
