The Types of Players You’ll Meet in an Escape Room (and How to Handle Them)

SOMMARIO

Have you ever done an escape rooms and thought: “Where did I find these people?”
Relax — it’s totally normal. Escape rooms don’t just test your logic and team spirit, they also serve as a perfect personality magnifier. Lock a group of humans in a room for 60 minutes, and you’ll see the best… and definitely the worst.

If you’re thinking of booking a session (or maybe you just got out of one and still hear the echoes of shouting in your head), this article is for you.
Here it is: the (unofficial but very real) guide to the player types you’ll meet in every escape room — and how to survive the experience.

The Thinker (a.k.a. Sherlock without the pipe)

He doesn’t talk, he processes. He’ll stare at a detail for ten minutes, then casually solve a puzzle no one even noticed.
He’s a logic machine, a walking algorithm disguised as a human being.

Too bad if you ask him, “Found anything yet?” — he’ll shoot you a look that screams: “I’m saving the world and you ask me that?”

How to handle him: Let him work in peace. Seriously. And please don’t say things like “Maybe it’s a mental puzzle…” (he knows — and he’s silently judging you).

The Overexcited Chaos Engine

Yells “I FOUND SOMETHING!” every seven seconds… even when it’s just a chair.
After three minutes, he’s opened every drawer, pulled all the levers, and probably triggered the self-destruct button on the space station.
His motto? If it glows, touch it. If it’s locked, force it. If it’s jammed… call the game master!

How to handle him: Give him a flashlight and tell him to “find stuff.” He’ll feel useful, be happy, and might (maybe) stop yelling every 30 seconds. Just don’t give him any logic puzzles or fragile mechanisms. Order is not in his vocabulary.

The Dramatic Reader (always out loud)

She picks up every scrap of paper and reads it out loud as if auditioning for a Shakespearean play. With feeling. Even if it’s a fake tax form.

How to handle her: Use that talent. Let her be the official narrator of the group. Her readings can be helpful — just remind her every 15 minutes that maybe, just maybe, you’ve already read that same clue… five times.

The Competitive Gamer

He walked in thinking this was a real-life first-person shooter. His mind is a mix of adrenaline, tactics, and speedrunning goals.
“We have to beat the room in under 45 minutes to set the record!” He’s sweating by minute six, has mentally mapped the entire room, and will give you the stink eye if you laugh and “waste time.”

How to handle him: Give him “side quests” like, “Can you find all the red objects?” He’ll fall for it. Meanwhile, the rest of you can play in peace. And remember to compliment him afterward — his ego will thank you.

The Self-Proclaimed Leader

Hasn’t seen a single clue yet, but has already assigned roles:
“You search here, you time us, you follow me.”
Too bad he ends up stuck on the easiest lock, arguing with a wardrobe.

How to handle him: Let him feel in control. “Great idea, let’s try it!” — even if you’re already doing the opposite. Give him the occasional pat on the back and say, “You’re essential.” (He’s not. But it keeps him calm.)

The Frozen One

Walks in, looks around… and freezes.
Completely overwhelmed, they stand still like a perfectly displayed IKEA mannequin. Occasionally mutters, “Guys, I don’t get it.”
They’re not wrong — but they also say it while staring at a chair.

How to handle them: Assign simple, clear tasks. “Check under that rug.” “Hold the timer.” “Stick with me.” They often warm up toward the end… which is usually too late, but still sweet.

The Conspiracy Theorist

They’ve clearly spent too much time on Reddit.
Every scratch is a coded message, every noise is Morse code.
“I’m telling you, the wall is emitting a 432 Hz frequency. If we combine the number of books with the table’s corners… we get the bunker’s PIN!”

How to handle them: Listen patiently and nod supportively. Then glance at the game master and pray this is all a dream.
Spoiler: the wall isn’t speaking. The books are just books. But not for them — they see beyond.
